Impact Of E-Commerce On Employment In India
“The online retail industry has been growing at an exponential rate over the past 10 years and it is expected to grow by 15% every year through 2021.”
There are many retailers that
came up all over the world after the internet made it easier for customers to
order items without having to leave their homes and have them delivered in no
time. However, as businesses started expanding, many people were able to gain
from it, while some lost their jobs as a result of greater competition.
Advantages:
E-commerce is a great way for
a family-run business to expand, as well as provide other businesses to have
access to the industry. With e-commerce, more and more people are able to start
their own businesses online.
E-commerce impacts employment
in a positive way because; it gives less opportunity for workers to be
exploited by their employers when they are able to shop online at any time
without having to leave their home or work in an environment where they feel
uncomfortable. In addition, the internet gives companies an opportunity to
expand globally without having barriers of relocation, shipping costs or taxes.
This is beneficial as it
allows growing businesses to reach not only more customers but also gain more
profit.
E-commerce creates employment
because it allows jobs in the retail sector, which are otherwise hard to come
by, to be filled by a wide range of workers all over the world.
For example, big-box
retailers, electronic computer stores, and furniture retailers employ many
people locally despite having few customers due to their large size. But with
e-commerce, even big companies can reach a wider audience at an affordable
price with efficient delivery. These benefits lead to more jobs and higher profits
while increasing efficiency and potentially lowering prices of consumer goods
as a result of competition among online retailers.
E-commerce is beneficial when
it comes to employment because it creates jobs for people that are not able to
find work otherwise, but there are also concerns about the impact of e-commerce
on employment.
Disadvantages:
There are people who have
lost their job with big-box retail stores or other big companies because of
mergers or downsizing. In addition, some workers may feel uncomfortable working
within a company that is so large as they fear being exploited by their larger
competitors and having no way out.
Some see this as a threat to
local economies, as workers are no longer able to support their local economy
by shopping at their town’s businesses.
Young workers are sometimes able to find work as customer service, teaching, or food servers in e-commerce environments; but do not get a steady and good payment for the work. Sometimes, Older consumers may feel pressured by e-commerce and aren’t able to buy the same goods that they used to buy in stores because of having more prices on their website.
